Look above at the image of liparid fish feeding. Does it surprise you that the world's deepest fish looks like that? What do you think they look like? Tadpoles? Snails? The liparid sure has an interesting shape! It has an elongated body, a large head, and tiny eyes. Why would it need big eyes in one of the darkest environments on Earth? On its head, it has sensory vibration pores for navigating through the dark waters of the Hadelpelagic zone. These pores on its head use vibrations to find their way around its habitat and they work similar to the echolocation used by bats and more animals. The liparid is a pretty small fish compared to fish like tuna and a puny fish compared to whales. Its size is 20 cm, or 8 inches. Because of its shape, it is often called the snail fish, but do you think it looks like a snail? Looks like a tadpole to me!
